With an engaging enthusiasm for jellyfish, author Juli Berwald shares answers to these questions and more on this episode of Studio of the Future! Ocean Scientist and Author

Juli Berwald is an enthusiastic ocean scientist with a new book entitled, “Spineless: The Science of Jellyfish and the Art of Growing a Backbone.” In college Juli’s first snorkel adventure took place in the Red Sea, where Marine invertebrates stole her heart. Hoping to study the ocean forever, she spent seven years building mathematical algorithms to interpret satellite imagery of the ocean, and received her Ph.D. in ocean science. Then she met her husband-to-be and drifted away from the ocean to Austin, Texas to start her family. She wrote textbooks and popular science articles for Wired.com, Oceanus, Redbook, and while writing for National Geographic Magazine, discovered a fact about jellyfish which led her back to the sea and the creation of this impactful, fascinating book.

How much does TBT save Texans in tax dollars every year? How likely are children of incarcerated mothers to become incarcerated later in life themselves? What is the quilt project? Our guests answer these questions and more inside this episode of Studio of the Future.
Pictured: Carol Waid, one of the three original founders of TBT; Lisa Davis-Bell, a former incarcerated woman and Katie Ford, the executive director of TBT; with host Sara Hickman.

Truth Be Told is an Austin nonprofit which offers programs designed by women for incarcerated women. Through personal storytelling, writing and healing arts, TBT helps women to break free from the imprisoning cycle of past trauma and abuse. These various programs also reduce stigma and re-entry barriers for formerly incarcerated women. One of the unique programs includes inviting outside women from the arts community — dancers, poets musicians — to perform inside the prisons. By treating incarcerated women as unique and valuable human beings, these women begin to value themselves and gain the courage and tenacity to make better choices in their lives.

What sage advice did her grandmother share about Eliza’s future? What are her thoughts about the state of the music industry, crowdfunding, patriarchy, politics, family and religion? Listen in for this tender, fierce and jubilant conversation between Eliza and Sara. Folk Musician

With two Grammy nominations, Eliza Gilkyson is a singer/songwriter and activist, one of the most respected musicians in the Folk, Roots and Americana genres today. The daughter of legendary songwriter Terry Gilkyson (“Bare Necessities”), Eliza began recording demos for her father while she was a teenager. Since then, she has released 20 recordings of her own, including her latest release, 2018’s “Secularia,” a collection of spiritually charged songs that do not fit within the parameters of traditional religious beliefs. Eliza challenges each of us to be accountable for our actions in such perilous times. This album’s stunning performances include the acclaimed Tosca String Quartet; cameos with Shawn Colvin, gospel singer Sam Butler, and a duet with her dear friend, the late Jimmy LaFave. There are several songs adapted from poetry by her grandmother Phoebe Hunter Gilkyson and music by her father, Terry.

Her music has been covered by Joan Baez, Bob Geldof, Tom Rush and Rosanne Cash and used in films, PBS specials and on prime-time TV.

Eliza has appeared on NPR, Austin City Limits, Mountain Stage, etown, XM Radio, Air America Radio and toured worldwide as a solo artist. She has also performed in support of Richard Thompson, Patty Griffin, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Dan Fogelberg, as well as with the Woody Guthrie review, alongside the Guthrie Family, Jimmy Lafave, Slaid Cleaves, and with special guests Pete Seeger, Jackson Browne and Kris Kristofferson. She has been inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame in the company of such legends as Willie Nelson, Townes Van Zandt and Nanci Griffith and is an ongoing winner of the Austin Chronicle’s various music awards, as well as numerous coveted Folk Alliance awards.

Eliza’s meditative “Requiem,” written as a prayer for those who lost their lives in the devastating tsunami in Southeast Asia, was recorded by the internationally recognized choral group Conspirare, whose version was nominated for a Grammy and won the prestigious Edison Award in Europe. The song has become a standard in choir repertory the world over. Two of her songs appeared on Joan Baez’ Grammy-nominated CD, “Day After Tomorrow.”

In 2011 and 2012, Eliza and label-mates John Gorka and Lucy Kaplansky performed as “Folk Super Trio” Red Horse, a side project whose CD stayed for months at the top of the Folk Music Charts. In 2014, Eliza was invited to contribute a track on the Jackson Browne tribute, “Looking Into You”, along with Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley, Sara Watkins, Shawn Colvin, Bonnie Raitt and others.

Support Sanford Community Center
Ron English (Episode 1, our first SOTF guest!) donated these 2 soft sculptures, 3 CDs and an XL t-shirt — all objects of his wildly creative mind and output!
Ron graciously brought all these items himself and even signed the Young MC sculpture while at our studio taping (on the back).
All proceeds are tax deductible and 100% go to benefit renovations through the Palacios Community Coalition (501c3) toward the Sanford Community Center.

About Sara Hickman

Sara Hickman is the producer and host of the podcast Studio of the Future. She is a musician, singer/songwriter, visual artist, and the State Musician of Texas (2010-2011), sandwiched between Willie Nelson and Lyle Lovett. She has performed twice on “The Tonight Show,” has been nominated for a Grammy, received an Honorary Degree from the National Association of Music Therapists, and you’ve heard her voice in commercials for Popeye’s, Daisy Sour Cream, Wal-Mart, Southwest Airlines, and many others. While State Musician, she oversaw the production of “The Best of Times,” in which 39 of her songs were performed by prominent Texas musicians (Willie Nelson, Shawn Colvin, Robert Earl Keen, Brave Combo, Marcia Ball, Ruthie Foster, etc) with all proceeds benefiting Creative Action, a non-profit that provides art and theatre collaborations in Central Texas schools. Her recordings have been used in TV and film, including “The Vampire Diaries,” “All My Children,” “American Idol,” and “Arachnophobia,” and she continues to receive humanitarian awards for her philanthropic endeavors. In Uganda, Sara teamed up with her dear friend, Lynne Dobson, to record an anniversary album with the African Children’s Choir and is currently involved in building a much needed fistula hospital for women and girls, the first of its kind for the country. Sara is currently concentrating on this podcast, producing/booking the MossFest Family annual concert series and creating visual art. She is mother to two freakin’ awesome daughters and has a very patient husband, who is a designer and photographer for their design company, Stingray.
